A Tradition Like No Other...

Amidst blooming azaleas, towering pines and flowering dogwoods, the first full week of April ushers in a stage unique to golf and to sport. Since 1934, the smallest field in major championship golf has competed for a chance to wear the Green Jacket and capture a place in golf history.

Construction on Augusta National began in 1931 and the course opened for limited play in December 1932. The formal opening of Augusta National took place in January 1933.

Looking to give back to golf, Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts proposed an annual professional golf tournament be held at Augusta National. Roberts proposed the event be called the Masters Tournament, but Jones objected initially, thinking it too presumptuous. Jones eventually relented and The Masters was officially adopted as the tournament name in 1939. From that day forward, The Masters has been played over the first full week of April, officially announcing the arrival of Spring to millions of golfers.
